Akin Gump Named to LatinoJustice’s Pro Bono Publico 2021 Class
(New York) – Akin Gump is pleased to share that LatinoJustice has named the firm to its Pro Bono Publico 2021 Class.
The LatinoJustice Awards “honor institutional and individual leaders who help to advance our mission” of creating “a more just society by using and challenging the rule of law to secure transformative, equitable and accessible justice, by empowering our community and by fostering leadership through advocacy and education.”
Akin Gump is being recognized for its pro bono work, specifically a matter in which the firm represented two victims of a wide-ranging criminal scheme by a Suffolk County, N.Y. police sergeant who would racially profile and pull over Hispanic drivers, and then rob them of cash during the traffic stop. Our clients bravely came forward and cooperated with law enforcement to help prosecute the sergeant, who was convicted and sentenced to jail time. Thanks to this, our clients were eligible for a U visa, set aside for victims of certain crimes who have suffered mental or physical abuse and are helpful to law enforcement or government officials in the investigation or prosecution of criminal activity. We represented our clients in their U visa cases, and both were approved, making them eligible to apply for legal permanent resident status in four years.
The LatinoJustice Awards will be part of the organization’s Annual Awards Gala, a virtual event to be held on November 10.
