Akin Named Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year by D.C. Bar
The D.C. Bar has named Akin Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year as part of its 2024 Annual Awards. These awards honor individuals and organizations that make important contributions to the advancement of the legal profession and have provided critical assistance to the District’s most vulnerable populations.
In a profile of the firm, the D.C. Bar noted that Akin’s D.C.-based lawyers contributed more than 21,700 pro bono hours on critical issues including “criminal justice and sentencing reform, the right to housing and asylum and human rights protections.”
The profile highlighted Akin’s longstanding commitment to representing clients previously sentenced as juveniles to life in prison without the possibility of parole since the 2016 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Montgomery v. Louisiana. It also noted that the D.C. office partnered with the “Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs to run the D.C. Compassionate Release Clearinghouse in response to legislation passed by D.C. Council in 2020.”
