Natasha Kohne Named to Daily Journal’s Top Cyber Lawyers 2019 List
(San Francisco) – Natasha Kohne, co-head of Akin Gump’s cybersecurity, privacy and data protection practice, has been named to Daily Journal’s Top Cyber Lawyers 2019 list. Ms. Kohne, the publication notes, represents clients “in risk assessments and the mitigation and management of cyber intrusions along with related privacy and security incident response preparation.”
When working with clients that have encountered such issues, Ms. Kohne says, “The first 24 hours following a breach are critical….I gather what I can. Usually in a data breach, there’s a bit of a fog at first as information trickles in.” She then brings in technical experts and does what is necessary “to minimize regulatory scrutiny down the road and to fend off plaintiffs’ lawyers.”
Daily Journal writes that Ms. Kohne also leads class action defenses, regulatory actions and law enforcement inquiries. In one particular data privacy class action over claims that smart TV-embedded software had collected sensitive consumer information that was then shared with ad-tech companies and data brokers, Ms. Kohne faced two firsts. The case was one of the first major “Internet-of-things” cases and it was the first case brought against a TV seller under a 1988 law, the Video Privacy Protection Act. No other law firm, she said, had experienced the myriad issues that the case presented.
Speaking of how varied her practice is, Ms. Kohne said, “There are such cutting-edge issues that you feel you are making an impact on shaping privacy laws.”
