National Law Journal Names Akin Gump a D.C. Litigation Department of the Year
(Washington, D.C.) – Akin Gump has been named one of The National Law Journal’s D.C. Litigation Departments of the Year. The firm was recognized in the “general litigation” category.
As part of its profile of the firm, NLJ spoke with litigation partners Charles Connolly and Anthony Pierce who described the firm’s approach to litigation and its strategy for building successful teams. They highlighted Akin Gump’s “first-class litigators who can tap into the subject matter expertise of a fully integrated law firm to craft a targeted strategy tailored to meet each client’s goals.”
Connolly and Pierce spoke of Akin Gump’s two biggest litigation cases of 2019, including one of the highest-profile national security cases of the year—a collaborative victory by the firm’s white collar and appellate teams to secure an acquittal on all counts for Bijan Rafiekian, a former business partner of ex-National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, who had been charged with conspiracy to act as an unlawful foreign agent in the United States. A second big win from last year, they said, saw the appellate and labor and employment teams score a complete victory for McDonald’s in a closely watched 9th Circuit case, which set “critical precedent that staves off far-reaching liability for franchisors in wage-and-hour class actions,” according to Connolly and Pierce.
Describing the most challenging and satisfying aspects of their work in litigation, Connolly and Pierce stated, “We sit at the intersection of law, commerce and government. So, while we have a broad litigation practice with highly accomplished trial lawyers, the breadth of our D.C. litigation practice gives us an advantage.”
