NLJ Names Akin Gump to Appellate Hot List for 12th Time
(Washington, D.C.) – Akin Gump is pleased to share that, in its annual Appellate Hot List contest, The National Law Journal has, for the 12th time in 13 years, named the firm to this prestigious listing of the country’s top law firms handling appellate matters.
In a profile accompanying the selection, Akin Gump Supreme Court and appellate partner James Tysse spoke about one of the firm’s landmark cases over the past year: Mamani, et al. v. Sánchez de Lozada and Sánchez Berzaín.
The case is, as Mr. Tysse notes, a “landmark human rights case” in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, one that the firm has pursued for 13 years in representation of the families and survivors of a massacre ordered by the defendant Bolivian leaders. The $10 million verdict that Akin Gump helped the plaintiffs win was set aside post-trial, but the firm’s work in the 11th Circuit appeal led the court “not only to unanimously reverse, but also to grant a new trial on a separate claim,” said Mr. Tysse.
He also pointed to a focus on key strengths —Indian law, labor,[intellectual property and bankruptcy— “working closely with substantive expert practitioners from each area” as the key to Akin Gump’s outstanding appellate performance over the past year.
Mr. Tysse closed by offering as advice: “Never settle for ‘good enough.’ If you aren’t happy with your argument, make it better. And that goes for career choices, too.”
