NLJ Picks Akin Gump for Ninth Consecutive Appearance on Appellate Hot List
(Washington, D.C.) – For its 2016 Appellate Hot List, which recognizes the 20 law firms that “[won] big in federal and state appeals courts around the country,” The National Law Journal has selected Akin Gump. This marks the ninth consecutive year that the firm has been picked for this honor.
In its published profile of the firm, NLJ notes Supreme Court and appellate practice co-leader Pratik Shah’s wins before the Federal Circuit, as he led the team defending Google’s invalidation of three mapping technology patents, and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit in two class action suits against a financial services client.
Describing the firm’s appellate practice, Mr. Shah told NLJ, “Our practice is a broad-ranging appellate practice. I argue in pretty much every appellate court in the country and the U.S. Supreme Court. And it's also broad in terms of subject matter.”
The profile spotlights labor and employment partner Daniel Nash’s victory on behalf of the National Football League in the case of running back Adrian Peterson, which saw the 8th Circuit reverse a lower court decision throwing out his suspension. As NLJ notes, this was a major victory for the NFL in the area of disciplining players for conduct detrimental to the sport.
Litigation partner and former Texas appellate court judge Murry Cohen and his win before the Texas 4th Court of Appeals are also noted by NLJ. The win for Anderson Energy saw a reversal of a trial court decision to dismiss Anderson’s claims on summary judgment in an important oil and gas dispute.
The profile closes by noting that Akin Gump has also represented appellate clients in bankruptcy and Native American law matters.
Founded in 1945, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 900 lawyers in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
