Based largely on the disclosure of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors, investors can quantify the risks and opportunities associated with a particular asset, business or industry sector.

In December 2015, the Financial Stability Board (FSB), an organization that studies vulnerabilities affecting the global financial system, announced the establishment of an industry-led Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures.
