The Journal of Robotics, Artificial Intelligence & Law has published the article “National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee Established by Department of Commerce,” written by Akin Gump senior consultant Lamar Smith, cybersecurity, privacy and data protection practice co-head Natasha Kohne, public law and policy partner Ed Pagano and senior counsel Hans Rickhoff and senior public policy specialist Christina Barone. The article, adapted from an Akin Gump client alert, discusses the developments and priorities regarding Commerce’s newly established National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Advisory Committee (NAIAC).

According to the authors, NAIAC will advise the president and the National AI Initiative Office on various AI issues, including the National AI Initiative as well as recommendations including:

  • The current state of U.S. competitiveness and leadership in AI.
  • A review of the progress made in implementing the Initiative, including the degree to which the Initiative is achieving its defined goals and metrics.
  • Issues related to AI and the U.S. workforce.

Additionally, the authors note, a subcommittee will be established to oversee the “development of AI with respect to law enforcement matters, referred to as the Subcommittee on AI and Law Enforcement,” advising the president on a spectrum of issues involving bias, security of data, adoptability, and legal standards.
