Energy Law Report has published the article “Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage—What Is the Big Deal?” Authored by Akin Gump partners Paul Greening and Matt Kapinos and associate Euan Strachan, the article, which originated as a post on AG Speaking Energy (click here to read), discusses the key role that carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) can play in suppressing emissions while not adversely impacting economic growth.
After an initial description of what CCUS is, the authors highlight some key projects around the world currently being undertaken in the CCUS space. They also address some of the challenges and opportunities that the oil and gas industry might face as the development of the CCUS sector continues to advance.
Greening, Kapinos and Strachan conclude by predicting there will be “a significant increase in focus on CCUS over the course of the [next] decade, particularly from the oil and gas sector.” This is likely to happen, they say, “as hydrocarbon producers come under pressure from governments and investors to fulfil their commitments to become ‘net zero’ emitters.”
