In the article “Project-financing lithium processing facilities,” written for Project Finance International (PFI), projects and energy transition partners Daniel Giemajner and Matt Hardwick discuss the unprecedented need for lithium processing facilities in Europe and North America and how these projects can be financed and delivered.

Giemajner and Hardwick highlight the growing gap in the battery value chain caused by under-investment in lithium processing and conversion facilities. The article notes that, unless addressed, this will create both a critical bottleneck in the production of battery cells and a barrier to achieving net-zero targets. The authors highlight that project finance solutions will need to be deployed to secure the level of capital required to meet this infrastructure gap and that, for the right projects, there is both political and commercial support.
