For its article “Law Firms Are Seeking Mental Health Solutions Together,” The American Lawyer quoted Akin chief human resources officer Meg Meserole. The article looks at cooperation and consultation among Big Law firms to address mental health concerns and find solutions collaboratively.
At a mental well-being legal industry summit held in April, more than 20 law firms participated, sharing best practices and fostering collaboration, with law firm leaders, senior partners and experts in attendance.
Meg, who attended the summit, said that it was a great example of cooperation within the otherwise-competitive Big Law industry, noting “The energy and the commitment in the room was palpable. It just felt like the next important topic.”
The article notes that Akin introduced programming during Well-Being Week in Law, annually the first week in May, with daily emails being sent out to firm staff, emphasizing community.
It also reports on two short breaks in the workday that the firm arranged during May, Mental Health Awareness Month: “Bronx Zoo Virtual Wild Encounter” video calls in which, separately, an armadillo and a sloth were featured, and employees and family from around the firm could chat with the keepers and ask questions about the animals. The calls were held under the auspices of the firm’s award-winning Be Well holistic well-being program.
