Akin's investment management partner Amanda Butler-Jones was quoted by Secondaries Investor for its article “Secondaries firms fine-tune strategies in next stage of market’s evolution.” The article looks at how secondaries firms, as market dynamics for secondary fund stakes and assets shift, are increasingly separating their investment strategies into dedicated specialist funds, pointing to major firms that have devised separate strategies from their main funds and launched dedicated vehicles.
Butler-Jones said, “Like many other markets where there’s increased competition, specialization is a way to diversify and distinguish yourself and increase market share.”
She noted that underwriting LP, or limited partner, portfolios and processes led by a GP, or general partner, requires different skillsets, explaining, “On the LP side it’s about diversification, which is very different from the GP-led model in terms of being focused on one or more assets.” She also said that, for some buyers, separating LP and GP-led strategies may be one way to distinguish themselves, which, Butler-Jones noted, is especially important in a buyer’s market.
