Akin Gump litigation partner Anthony Pierce has been quoted in the Bloomberg Law article “Angry Undergrads, Studying Online, Sue for Billions in Refunds.” The article reports that more than 50 colleges and universities have been sued by students who are demanding partial tuition, room-and-board and fee refunds following the campus shutdowns caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Bloomberg notes that the students’ lawyers are seeking class-action status on behalf of hundreds of thousands of students in claims that could potentially involve billions of dollars.

Pierce described it as “an economic tsunami” with more suits expected to follow. “The plaintiffs’ bar sees an opportunity here,” he said.

Pierce recently co-authored an Akin Gump client alert on this topic, also published in University Business, which can be read by clicking here.
