Charles Connolly, a partner in Akin Gump’s litigation practice, spoke with The Wall Street Journal about Jennifer Shasky Calvery, the departing director of the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).
Calvery spent nearly four years running FinCEN. She previously worked at the Department of Justice, where she focused on anti-money-laundering enforcement, eventually becoming chief of the department’s Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering Section.
Connolly, who worked with Calvery at the Justice Department, praised Calvery in the article “Departing FinCEN Director Leaves Record of Enforcement, Engagement” for employing little-used authorities and deploying them in novel ways. Among other things, he said, Calvery used geographic-targeting orders to collect intelligence on potential money-laundering risks in the fashion industry and in real estate. “Jennifer was very aggressive in redefining FinCEN to become an enforcement authority, as well as a regulatory agency,” Connolly added.
