Alliance for American Manufacturing has quoted Akin Gump public law and policy partner Clete Willems in its article “Supporting American Workers Against the Unfair Trade Practices of China’s Government.” The article discusses the U.S. House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Trade’s recent hearing on supporting U.S. workers and businesses with regard to China’s unfair trade practices.

According to the outlet, Willems recommended a three-point plan for Congress to address these issues, suggesting that the U.S.:

  1. Grow certain economic sectors that are of import to China.
  2. Directly address China’s trade policies, including issuing investment restrictions and strengthening policies around forced labor.
  3. Prioritize diplomacy to ensure that China abides by its commitments of the “Phase One” trade deal, and anticipate expanding negotiations to address unfair trade practices.

Finally, Willems urged the U.S. to take action against China in the event its government does not abide by the rules.
