For its article “U.S. companies make case for keeping Cuba organic,” POLITICO quoted Akin Gump public law and policy senior policy advisor Devry Boughner Vorwerk on U.S. industry interest in Cuba as a source of organic products for U.S. markets.

The article notes that Cuba, having been deprived of chemical fertilizers and pesticides since the collapse of the Soviet Union, has been farming organically for several decades.

Vorwerk, who, in her capacity as chair of the U.S. Agricultural Coalition for Cuba, accompanied President Obama on his recent historic trip to the island, said that if Cuban farmers can fill a gap in the U.S. market for organic food, then they should take advantage of the opportunity.
