Akin Gump oil and gas partners Stephen Davis and John LaMaster have authored the USA chapter in the Global Legal Insights: Energy 4th Edition, which was recently published.
The chapter provides an overview of the current energy mix and the place in the market of different energy sources. Davis and LaMaster note that the share of electricity generation from coal has declined from 42 percent in 1990 to 29 percent in 2013. At the same time, the share of electricity generation from natural gas has more than doubled from 19 percent in 1990 to 40 percent in 2013. The share of electricity generated from nuclear energy and from renewable energy sources has also increased over the same period.
The authors then discuss the changes in the energy situation in the last 12 months that are likely to have an impact on future direction or policy, including a significant “shakeout” in the U.S. shale industry. They also write about developments in government policy, strategy and approach, including legislation and regulation, and judicial decisions, court judgments and results of public inquiries that might affect the energy industry.
Assisting Davis and LaMaster with this article were Akin Gump international trade partner Edward Rubinoff; energy regulation, markets and enforcement partner Chip Cannon; oil and gas partner Gabriel Procaccini; and global project finance partner and chair Edward Zaelke.
