Hedge Fund Law Report has interviewed Akin Gump investment management partner John Hamilton following his move to Akin Gump earlier this summer. In the article, “Akin Gump Continues Expansion of Investment Management Practice,” Hamilton spoke of his practice and some of the issues on which he advises clients.
Hamilton described his work as focused on advising private fund managers on the formation and operation of a wide range of investment vehicles across the liquidity spectrum. He told Hedge Fund Law Report that his clients range from “hedge fund managers trading liquid investments to sponsors that are more focused on more illiquid investments, such as credit or other kinds of PE-style vehicles.” He credited his in-house experience at Highbridge Capital as being valuable in enabling him to tailor advice to clients “to something that actually makes sense and that can be implemented.”
The article notes that Hamilton also advises clients on the incorporation of sustainability and impact-focused investment themes into their product offerings. He pointed to environmental, social and governance (ESG) investing as a key trend “that is definitely front and center from an investor demand perspective.” While European investors had previously been the driving force behind this, it is now U.S. investors, he said, that have led to universal demand for ESG.
In addition, Hamilton discussed the growth of hybrid fund structures and shared his thoughts on the Asian markets, having previously served as Head of Hedge Fund Consulting at Morgan Stanley in Hong Kong.
Hamilton’s arrival at Akin Gump, the article reports, follows that of investment management partner Brian Daly, who joined the firm in April. (Click here to learn more.) Terence Rozier-Byrd joined the firm’s investment management practice shortly thereafter. (Click here for more.)
