Akin Gump public law and policy co-head G. Hunter Bates has been featured in a podcast episode produced by The Lobbying Show on “Practicing the Habit of Excellence.”
Bates, a former chief of staff to Sen. Mitch McConnell, began by discussing his first experience in politics—a college internship in McConnell’s Washington office. He noted that, for those who are interested in people and leadership, “there are a number of things you can do, but politics is a very logical one, so my interest in politics really grew out of a passion for leadership and a love of working with people.”
The conversation then shifted to an examination of different aspects of Bates’ career, including his experiences as a law clerk for a federal judge in Kentucky, as legal counsel in Sen. McConnell’s Capitol Hill office and then as a candidate for lieutenant governor of Kentucky.
Bates then offers some advice to those embarking on their careers, stressing the importance of practicing “the habit of excellence. Whatever you do,” he added, “do it well, and opportunities will emerge.”
