On the occasion of the first anniversary of the American Bar Association seven-step pledge to improve the mental health and well-being of lawyers, Meg Meserole, chief human resources officer at Akin Gump, and Kimm Merkel, director of health and well-being at the firm, have written the article “Pursuing Wellness: When A Firm Brings Counseling On Site” for Law360.
Akin Gump was an inaugural signatory of the pledge, which Meserole and Merkel say “has provided a framework within which firms can continue to enhance their well-being efforts, introduce new ideas and initiatives, and share best practices with a spirit of generosity and community in support of a common goal.” They discuss the pillar of the pledge calling for confidential access to in-house mental health self-assessment tools and resources that, at Akin Gump, “has surpassed every expectation” since launching in April 2018. In addition, they observe that as programs like the one at Akin Gump become more common across the legal industry, “they are also creating incremental improvement in the well-being of our lawyers and staff.”
