Irene Steiner, a partner in Akin Gump’s tax practice, is quoted in Kiplinger’s on ways to reduce one’s estate tax due to changes in the tax law this year.

Steiner emphasizes the importance of establishing a trust if you live in the District of Columbia or one of the 16 states with an estate tax. She says that if the exemption in one of those states is less than the federal exemption, “there could be a hefty tax to pay.” In New York, for example, Steiner notes that an estate could owe nothing to the federal government, while facing a large bill from the state.
