Akin Gump international trade partner Jonathan Poling spoke with the FCPA Compliance & Ethics blog for the Big Brains in Compliance podcast. Poling discussed some of his past work at the Department of Justice (DOJ) as well as other important trade compliance issues, including how he thinks the work of the DOJ will change under the Biden-Harris administration.

Poling first talked about his time at DOJ, where he worked a decade ago within the National Security Division. Much of his focus, he said, was on economic sanctions, where there were “a surprising number of gaping holes.”

Looking at the new administration, Poling predicted a continued focus on China and foreign influence. He also spoke of what he thinks Attorney General Merrick Garland can do to rebuild the morale of some federal prosecutors at DOJ.

Finally, Poling described his current practice, noting that he works with clients to help them “navigate a complicated regulatory space that is still very antiquated and doesn’t always fit their businesses.”
