Akin Gump real estate partner John Bain has been recognized by Law360 as one of its Rising Stars, lawyers under the age of 40 whose legal accomplishments “transcend their age.” In its profile of him, Law360 covered a range of topics, including:
The biggest deal of his career: Bain advised 7-Eleven in its acquisition of more than 1000 convenience stores from Sunoco LP for $3.3 billion (click here to learn more)—a challenging deal, he said, because “each of the individual properties had to be dealt with individually. There were a number of teams of people who had to be involved with each and every decision involving each and every property.”
His proudest moment: Representing Vallourec in 2013 in the development of a $1.3 billion steel mill in Ohio. After being invited to the grand opening celebration for bringing the mill online, Bain said, “What made me proud about that situation was actually all of the steel workers who were there ... I got to meet them, shake their hands. They were all excited. The area has suffered greatly since the decline of the ... Rust Belt.”
His motivation: Being the first person in his family to go to college has always been at the back of his mind in terms of motivation. “For a long time in my life, I’ve just spent a lot of energy and focus on getting better at whatever it is I’m doing. Education and skill refinement became a very important part of what made me feel like my life had momentum. ... Now in my life, my family motivates me a lot.”
How real estate law will change in 10 years: “We’re probably going to face ... more pace increases in terms of the timelines that deals get completed on. We’re probably going to face a little bit of challenge from artificial intelligence. There are likely to be other changes that I don’t think any of us can tell you ... just at the rate technology is increasing.”
