“How the UK Smart Regulatory Strategy Fuels AI Innovation,” an article by Akin artificial intelligence (AI) co-lead and head of international competition Davina Garrod, antitrust & international competition partner Scott Pettifor and technology & disputes counsel Jenny Arlington, has been published by Law360.
On November 21, the U.K.’s Communications and Digital Lords Committee considered the role of regulators and emerging trends regarding large language models and heard evidence from regulators and industry experts. For the article, the Akin team considers this committee discussion, the U.K. government’s AI white paper (most recently updated in August 2023) and the wider regulatory backdrop of the government’s efforts to foster a “clear, pro-innovation regulatory environment”.
Davina, Scott and Jenny discuss how the government is proposing to address the risks of reliance on existing regulators and of inconsistencies and regulatory lacunae opening up, by taking an evidence-based and proportionate interdisciplinary approach.
The authors also highlight the government’s pro-innovation approach to AI, noting that it “shows no signs of slowing down its efforts toward achieving its ambition to solidify the U.K.’s position as a global leader in AI regulation and development.”
