Law360 has published the article “Practical Steps For Contractor Sick Leave Compliance,” written by Akin Gump labor and employment partner Nathan Oleson, litigation partner Scott Heimberg and labor and employment counsel Andrew Turnbull.
The article discusses final rules issued last month by the Department of Labor implementing an order by President Obama that requires federal contractors and subcontractors to provide certain employees with up to seven days of paid sick leave each year. This would include leave for family care and absences related to domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.
Oleson, Heimberg and Turnbull write that the final rule “imposes another set of onerous requirements on federal contractors in addition to the many other executive orders issued by the Obama administration over the last several years.” They then discuss the specific types of contracts that are covered by the rule. The authors conclude with some practical steps to be taken to ensure compliance.
