Law360 has published the article “Metal Importers Beware Of New Expanded Tariff Risks,” written by several members of Akin Gump’s international trade practice: partners Bernd Janzen and Suzanne Kane, counsel Devin Sikes, and associates Tebsy Paul and Colette McCrone. The article, which originated as an Akin Gump client alert, discusses a move by President Trump to expand Section 232 tariffs on aluminum and steel.

The authors write that Mr. Trump first imposed the tariffs in 2018, “following investigations conducted by the Department of Commerce, which found that U.S. imports of certain aluminum and steel impaired the national security of the United States.” This new move by the administration, the article says, “represents a significant expansion of the underlying Section 232 action on aluminum and steel and is expected to impact a range of U.S. imports valued at roughly $800 million during 2019.”
