Law360 has quoted Akin international trade partner Lars-Erik Hjelm in its article “CBP To Crack Down On 'Vague' Cargo Descriptions.” The article discusses the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) recent announcement that in alignment with existing federal regulations will “begin cracking down on cargo shipments that have limited identifiers such as ‘gift,’ ‘daily necessities,’ ‘accessories,’ or ‘parts.’

Lars notes that CBP’s announcement underscores “that bad actors are likely taking advantage of  de minimis treatment.” He also shared that stronger enforcement by CBP may be a better option than legislation to do away from duty-free treatment, which could be harder to enforce.
