Akin Gump international trade partner Mac Fadlallah and counsel Lauren Talerman have authored the WorldECR article “Shifting Sands in the Arabian Gulf?” The article examines some of the factors that could affect trading relations with and between countries in the Middle East.
Fadlallah and Talerman write that the Abraham Accords, signed in September 2020 and which led to the normalization of relations between Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, have produced “a flurry of activity between Israel and UAE.” They say they expect that trend to continue “and to grow as activities expand between these countries and other countries in the region.”
Another turning point in the region, the authors write, is that the UAE and Bahrain have said “they would no longer maintain the Arab League boycott on Israel.” There is also the possibility of the United States engaging with Iran and revisiting the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the nuclear deal from which the United States withdrew in May 2018.
Fadlallah and Talerman conclude with a look at some of the sanctions- and security-related risks that companies should consider over the next two to three years, based on early actions taken by the Biden-Harris administration.
