Akin Gump consultant Mario Ramirez appeared on the television program MSNBC Live with Katy Tur to talk about the lifting of COVID-related restrictions in certain parts of the United States.

Ramirez equated the current elimination of mask mandates with making “the implicit bet that the risk of COVID to younger persons offsets the risk of opening when you don’t have a large segment of your population vaccinated.” What happens in one state, he said, affects “all the other states in the Union.”

Ramirez added that the virus thrives most when there is mixed messaging or unclear guidance, and that runs the risk, he noted, of “reopening the country to further spread.”
