For its article “US importers face regulatory unknown amid Trump’s tariff threat on Mexico,” MLex Market Insight quoted Akin Gump international trade partner Lars Hjelm on the uncertainties surrounding compliance with the Trump administration’s announced plan to levy tariffs on Mexico. According to the article, Customs and Border Protection has not received instructions on administration and collection of the new duties.

Hjelm, whose practice focuses on customs law and policy, said, “Customs is between a rock and a hard place because they’re being asked to jump hoops and hurdles to try to get a notice out.”

He added, “I’ve been at this for 30 years and I’ve never seen anything like this—particularly under a free trade agreement.”
