Akin Gump international trade partner Nnedi Ifudu Nweke spoke with The American Lawyer for a Q&A column, “How I Made Partner.” In the article, Ifudu Nweke, who became a partner in 2018, discusses, among other things, her thoughts on being a partner, some of the keys to successful business development and who had the greatest influence in her career. Some of the questions and her responses are included here.
Among the topics she discussed were her thoughts on what contributed to the firm making her a partner and the keys to successful business development. She also discussed who has been the greatest influence in her career that helped prepare her to become a partner (“[Akin Gump partner] Wynn Segall… has given me the opportunity to lead various challenging matters that allowed me to grow, shine and form relationships with key clients and partners across the firm.”) and her advice to an associate who wants to make partner (“The road to partnership is about much more than doing excellent legal work. Get out of your office and network within the firm. Meaningful relationships are invaluable.”).
