Akin Gump intellectual property partner Matthew Pearson has been selected as one of Philadelphia Business Journal’s “Best of the Bar 2020” honorees, which recognizes 40 local lawyers who, in the past 12 months, “have distinguished themselves in their practice specialties.”
In its profile of him, PBJ covered a range of topics, including:
A recent significant case: Pearson played a leading role on the Akin Gump team that secured a complete victory for 3M Innovative Properties in patent infringement litigation against a direct competitor in the dental composite space, Kerr Corporation, in the U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board regarding 3M’s dental filler materials made up of new combinations of nanomaterials.
One misconception about lawyers: “I have heard it said that lawyers just focus on winning and exploiting technicalities in the law,” Pearson said, adding, “We’re in a service-based business, and the lawyers I admire are not only competent, but are focused on helping clients solve real problems.”
The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the legal profession: Pearson noted that he expected to see an increase in flexibility and adaptability in communication, saying, “Our clients are working in virtual teams, with short, focused meetings. Adapting to that takes planning and technology — and being mindful about keeping talented teams engaged. I don’t think those things are going to go away.”
