Akin Gump intellectual property partner Rubén Muñoz has been profiled among Philadelphia Business Journal’s “Best of the Bar 2021” honorees, which recognizes local lawyers “who within the last 12 months have distinguished themselves in their practice specialties.”
In the profile, PBJ covered a range of topics, including:
A recent significant case: Muñoz secured a victory for Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals last September in a significant patent challenge brought by Mylan N.V. regarding Janssen’s multibillion-dollar product for the treatment of schizophrenia. The case was appealed to U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, which issued a unanimous, precedential decision in favor of Janssen. Learn more here.
Increasing diversity among senior law firm positions: “There has to be a concerted effort from all of us in the profession. We need to identify diverse talent early, and then we have to focus on mentoring and sponsoring those candidates because no one makes it alone in this profession.”
A significant historic case that he wishes he could have been involved in: “Marbury v. Madison, which established "judicial review" and, in turn, gave true meaning to the concept of "checks and balances," a bedrock principle of American democracy.”
