Pratik Shah Quoted on Potential SCOTUS Changes by Bloomberg Law

Bloomberg Law has quoted Akin Gump Supreme Court and appellate practice head Pratik Shah in its article “All-Female Liberal Wing to Change Supreme Court Dynamics.” The article discusses the potential impact of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Breyer’s replacement, as well as Justices Kagan and Sotomayor’s potential new roles on both sides of the bench.
Speaking on Kagan and Sotomayor, who will be the senior liberal justices once Breyer steps down, Shah expects that they both will take on more prominent roles. The publication noted that Sotomayor will have the ability to assign dissenting opinions that speak to the issues of great import to her, such as criminal justice and gender equality. Further, Shah expects to see Kagan, who has been largely focused on cases implicating democracy, such as redistricting issues, “marshal her formidable powers of persuasion and sharp pen more forcefully on a more regular basis.”
Last week, Shah and fellow senior counsel Aileen McGrath, both former law clerks to Justice Breyer, were quoted by several media outlets following the announcement of his retirement. They also published tributes on his tenure in SCOTUSBlog. Read more here.
