For its article “Biden’s Indo-Pacific economic plan must be stronger if it hopes to counter China,” South China Morning Post quoted Akin lobbying & public policy partner Clete Willems. The article discusses “Jump-starting U.S. Trade and Economic Engagement in the Indo-Pacific,” a report released this week by the Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI) that indicates that the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework announced in May 2022 by President Biden is likely to fail in its mission of creating an alternative to the trade agreements that China is offering in the region.

Clete, along with ASPI vice-president Wendy Cutler, authored the report, which notes, “To put it bluntly, if the United States does not take a bolder approach, we risk becoming spectators as our partners work among themselves and with China to strengthen supply chain connectivity and regional economic integration.”
