Steven Schulman Quoted by Law360 on Challenges for Clients and Lawyers Within Immigration Court System

Akin Gump pro bono partner Steven Schulman was extensively quoted for the Law360 article “Will A Court Bottleneck Halt Trump’s Immigration Crackdown?,” which discusses the challenges inherent in the U.S. immigration court system and the potential impact of the Trump administration’s initiatives regarding certain immigrants.
On the topic of what the article characterizes as perhaps the greatest impediment to administration immigration enforcement efforts—the immigration court system—Schulman said, “Already, the system is completely overloaded. You have an administration that wants to push more people through it. Something’s got to give.”
Schulman, whose practice includes a substantial focus on immigration law, noted that one of the greatest challenges for law firms is the length of time before a case is heard, which can be up to five years. He noted, however, “It’s not a five-year litigation. It’s a four-and-a-half year wait and a six-month litigation.”
He added that, because of the delay, associates may never handle an immigration case they started, because, increasingly, they will have moved on. Schulman said, “There is potentially a generation of young lawyers who haven’t ever done immigration cases.”
