Akin Gump practice attorney Nina Orendain, a member of the firm’s investment management practice in Dallas, has been profiled in the Texas Bar Blog’s “Pro Bono Spotlight.” The article is part of a series featuring pro bono volunteers as part of National Pro Bono Celebration Week.
Orendain first discusses the type of pro bono work she does, noting that her current focus is Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program cases for Spanish-speaking clients. Most recently, she has worked on wills and related documents and special warranty deeds. She also provides translation assistance to colleagues “who are representing Spanish-speaking clients in various immigration, asylum, and other pro bono matters.” Her experience doing pro bono work goes back to when she first began practicing law in 1981.
Having grown up in a family committed to social justice, Orendain said she understands the importance of pro bono work, pointing out that she saw at an early age how “education and a profession such as law could be used to help people improve many aspects of their lives.” She vowed when she was younger that she “would always help others in any way” she could.
Orendain also spoke of what she has learned over the years from doing pro bono work, she offered some advice to lawyers interested in doing pro bono work for the first time and she shared one of her favorite pro bono success stories.
