In its article “Akin Gump Tests Law Office of the Future,” The Texas Lawbook featured Akin Gump’s eco-friendly and space-efficient modernization of its Dallas office.
The revamped office space was designed and implemented for the firm’s Dallas investment funds practice group and features amenities such as height-adjustable standing desks for every attorney, treadmills with desk space, offices with sliding clear doors and whiteboard walls, among others.
The Akin Gump attorneys who worked with the designers on the project noted that the renovations have brought operational benefits beyond aesthetics and have been well received by their fellow practitioners. Investment funds partner Burke McDavid said, “The traditional law firm layout is a really poor use of space. Aside from lawyer compensation, real estate is the biggest cost.” Investment funds partner Eliot Raffkind noted that the boost in efficiency and collaboration among attorneys has been the biggest benefit. He added, “Lawyers have never historically used the word ‘efficient.’ [Today] more and more clients are demanding it.”
Dallas office partner-in-charge Ken Menges added, “It’s frankly a modern approach to doing business. It’s great for lower [costs of] services, which in our competitive environment is critical.”
