Akin white collar defense & government investigations partner Paul Butler speaks to The Washington Post following the Justice Department’s decision to drop fraud charges against the firm’s client Maryland attorney Jeremy Schulman. The article “Justice Dept. drops case against lawyer alleged to have taken Somali funds,” examines the years of post-indictment litigation that preceded the prosecution’s motion to dismiss the charges. Schulman had faced allegations of misappropriating funds and wrongfully representing his authority to act on behalf of the Government of Somalia while returning assets to the war-torn country that were frozen in the aftermath of its civil war in 1991.

Paul and co-counsel Stanley E. Woodward Jr. of Brand Woodward noted that the government had no path to victory. “It was clear to Judge Xinis that the evidence to support the charges against Mr. Schulman simply didn’t exist,” said Paul.
