Akin partner in charge of the Washington, D.C. office Anthony Pierce is quoted by The Washington Post in an article titled, “The Inside Story of the Pardon of Marcus Garvey.” The article looks at the 100-year fight to secure a posthumous pardon for civil rights activist Marcus Garvey, who was convicted of mail fraud following a trial that was widely seen as flawed.

Tony tells The Washington Post that Garvey’s trial was “replete with reversible errors and questionable evidence.”

He highlights the firm’s pro bono representation of the Garvey family and the process of filing petitions for a presidential pardon with the U.S. Department of Justice under the Obama, Trump and Biden administrations saying, “It took too long, but we are glad it came.”
