(Washington, D.C.) – Akin is commemorating Mental Health Awareness Month and Well-Being Week in Law (WWIL) May 1-5. Throughout the week, the firm will share regular communications highlighting holistic aspects of well-being and offering tips and resources in these areas: physical, spiritual, occupational and intellectual, social, emotional.

WWIL is sponsored by Institute for Well-Being in Law (IWIL), for which Akin is a founding champion and is among its collaborators. According to the Institute, IWIL is a nonprofit organization “dedicated to the betterment of the legal profession by focusing on a holistic approach to well-being” that is committed to leading a “culture shift in law to establish health and well-being as core centerpieces of professional success.”

“We are proud to collaborate with the Institute for Well-Being in Law as a founding champion and sponsor of its ‘Well-Being Week in Law’ initiative,” said Akin chief human resources officer Meg Meserole. “At Akin, we recognize the importance of promoting holistic well-being in the legal profession and are committed to leading efforts in the legal community to destigmatize mental health. We support these important efforts through our Be Well program that includes a robust suite of programs and benefits designed to meet people where they are in their personal well-being journeys.”

Last year, Akin’s Be Well program earned the firm recognition as one of three organizations to receive the inaugural Carolyn C. Mattingly Award for Mental Health in the Workplace from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and The Luv u Project. This marked the most recent accolade for this award-winning program, which also earned the firm top honors in New York and Washington, D.C. and second place in Texas in the Healthiest Employers awards. Earlier this year, the firm was recognized for the second year in a row by the American Heart Association (AHA) for achieving Gold Level Recognition in AHA’s annual Workplace Health Achievement Index.

Akin is also an inaugural and annual signatory to the American Bar Association’s “The Pledge Campaign,” which focuses on raising awareness, facilitating a reduction in the incidence of problematic substance use and mental health distress, and improving lawyer well-being through the use of an employer pledge addressing a seven-point framework.
