(Washington, D.C.) – Akin announced today that Sean Conway has rejoined the firm as a partner in the telecom, media and technology practice (TMT) in Washington, D.C. Conway brings high-level government experience having served most recently in the Department of Commerce as deputy chief counsel for the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and previously at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Conway played a key role advising NTIA and Department of Commerce leadership in the implementation of nearly $50 billion of federal broadband grant programs known as the “Internet for All” initiative. He also worked closely with agency leadership and senior administration officials on the National Spectrum Strategy and other spectrum matters. At the FCC, Conway worked on broadband funding and spectrum policy as an attorney in both the Wireless and Wireline bureaus.

“Sean brings a wealth of government experience at both the FCC and NTIA to our TMT practice and will provide important counsel for our clients that are navigating federally-funded broadband grant programs and engaging in private transactions for regulated TMT companies,” said Akin co-chair elect Abid Qureshi. “We’re delighted to welcome Sean back to the firm.”

Telecom, media and technology practice head Jennifer Richter added, “This is a critical time with respect to the $42.5 billion Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment Program that is administrated by NTIA. Sean has intimate knowledge of this program and will be able to help clients navigate changes that are coming. The Commerce Secretary has been clear that this program is undergoing a significant review and is likely to be adjusted in material respects. Clients will need clear advice about how to proceed, and Sean is ideally situated to provide solid advice. As one of the advisors on the National Spectrum Strategy, Sean also is ideally suited to help clients identify and advocate for wireless spectrum that should be made available for a variety of services. We are thrilled to have Sean join our team and assist Akin’s clients.”

Conway started his legal career at Akin first as a summer associate and then as a TMT associate.

“Akin has a phenomenal regulatory platform, including its TMT practice and I’m thrilled to be returning to private practice at the firm where I started following my years of government service,” said Conway. “I look forward to working with new and old colleagues and leveraging my legal and policy experience to help our clients navigate opportunities in the TMT space.”
