Akin Gump Advises Mars Inc. on Development of New Texas Wind Farm

(Washington, D.C.) – Akin Gump helped McLean, Virginia-based Mars, Incorporated move towards carbon neutral operations by advising the company in its agreement with Sumitomo Corporation of America on a new 200-megawatt wind farm.
The Mesquite Creek Wind farm, which will have 118 turbines, was jointly developed by Sumitomo and BNB Renewable Energy. Located near Lamesa, Texas, and with a footprint of 25,000 acres, Mesquite Creek represents the biggest long-term commitment to renewable energy use of any food manufacturing business in the United States.
The wind farm power project will generate energy representing 24 percent of Mars’ total global factory and office carbon footprint—equivalent to the electricity required to power 61,000 U.S. households—and is a big step for Mars towards its goal of becoming carbon neutral in its operations.
Tom Trimble, a partner in Akin Gump’s energy practice, led the team from the firm advising Mars. The team also included energy partners Jeremy Schwer and William Morris, energy regulatory practice co-head Julia Sullivan, tax partner David Burton and energy associate John Bryant.
