(Washington, D.C.) – Akin Gump has advised Zoetic Global on a new 20-year power purchase agreement with the Electricity Company of Ghana for 100 megawatts of additive power generation at Ghana’s Akosombo Dam on Lake Volta.
The project will involve an array of modular hydrokinetic turbines to be deployed in the post-dam wash of the Akosombo Dam. The In-Stream Auger Turbine (IAT) technology being used is designed for high efficiency power generation from flowing water and will leverage existing infrastructure at the dam site including grid connections, access roads, and on-site maintenance buildings.
Tom Trimble, a partner in Akin Gump’s global energy transactions (GET) practice, led the team advising Zoetic, which included GET senior counsel Susan Dean and counsel Carl Fleming as well as intellectual property partner Karol Kepchar.
Regarding the project, Mr. Trimble stated that it would serve to activate more development in the hydro power market, adding that “Zoetic addresses an untapped market opportunity, which sits between the traditional large-scale hydro dams and small micro hydro projects.”
