(Washington, D.C.) – The Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) has issued a final written decision in Unified Patents, LLC v. Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), holding all claims of U.S. Patent 9,838,720 unpatentable. Akin Gump represented Unified Patents in the case, which began in February 2019 with a petition for inter partes review.
The ‘720 patent, pertaining to video compression, is owned by the KAIST and the Korean Broadcasting System, which have both participated in the HEVC Advance and MPEG-LA patent pools. Unified Patents filed the challenge as part of its ongoing efforts in its SEP Video Codec Zone.
The Akin Gump team comprised intellectual property partner Cono Carrano, counsel Ryan Stronczer, and associates Clark Gordon and Sohrab Hajarian.
