Akin Gump Recognized in WorldECR Awards for U.S. Sanctions Law Firm of the Year

(Washington, D.C.) – Akin Gump has been named a runner-up in the WorldECR Awards category of U.S. Sanctions Law Firm of the Year.
WorldECR cited Akin Gump’s “impressive breadth of experience representing companies on matters related to sanctions programs, including those over Cuba, Ukraine/Russia, Iran, Venezuela, Myanmar, Iraq and Libya.” The publication also noted the roles of partners Shiva Aminian, Thomas J. McCarthy, Jonathan C. Poling, Edward L. Rubinoff and Wynn H. Segall.
Several cases handled by Akin Gump were noted by the publication, including the following:
- Assisting a U.S.-based oil and gas services company in obtaining OFAC licenses in order to travel and provide services to oil and gas companies operating in Russia and Cuba;
- advising a medical company based in Sweden on international trade compliance relating to the export of equipment to Venezuela; and
- assisting a Cyprus-based media company that was previously subject to majority ownership of a specially designated national with the preparation of a license application to OFAC for the unblocking of funds and other property under the Ukraine/Russia-related sanctions program.
In their second year, the WorldECR Awards recognize “outstanding work, vision, best practice, commercial benefit to the company, and contribution to international security, of organizations and individuals working in the fields of export control and sanctions compliance and nonproliferation.”
