(Washington, D.C.) – An Akin Gump team comprising intellectual property practice head Steven Zager, partner Michael Kahn, senior counsel Daniel Moffett and associates Caitlin Olwell, Michael Petegorsky and Matthew Weiss represented defendant Sorenson Communications Inc. as a federal judge threw out a $5.4 million damages award to plaintiff Ultratec Inc. resulting from a jury trial last fall.

In his ruling last week, U.S. District Judge James Peterson found in favor of Sorenson, ruling that plaintiff Ultratec Inc.’s patent for a closed-caption telephone system is “invalid as obvious.”

Law360 covered the win in its story “Judge Kills $5M Phone Caption Verdict, Rules Patent Obvious.” Read the full story here.
