(New York) – Akin Gump is pleased to announce it served as mentors to a team of students from New York’s Bronx High School of Science that won this year’s citywide Mentor Moot Court competition, which was sponsored by the Justice Resource Center and Fordham Law School.

Lawyers from Akin Gump guided the students through a difficult and increasingly relevant double-issue problem involving questions under the Fourth Amendment and the All Writs Act in a hypothetical situation involving an impending terrorist bomb threat against a high school and an “unhackable” cell phone encryption software. The tournament included more than 40 other high school teams and required the team from Bronx Science to advance through a preliminary round of competition in November, followed by three single-elimination rounds in succeeding weeks.

In the final argument, which was held on December 15 at the Thurgood Marshall United States Courthouse, the Bronx Science team squared off against a team from Forest Hills High School before a distinguished panel of federal judges: Judge Peter Hall of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Judges Richard Sullivan and Vernon Broderick of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, Judge Martin Glenn of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York and Magistrate Judge Lois Bloom of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. After an hour of fast-paced questioning from the judges, Bronx Science was declared the winner.

Leading the team of Akin Gump coaches was litigation associate Stan Chiueh. He was joined by fellow associates Kaitlin Dabbert, Adam Hockensmith, Daniella Roseman, and Elizabeth Rosen. Assisting them in the championship rounds were associate David Adler, law clerks Elise Bernlohr, Nat Botwinick and Katie Tongalson, counsel Jenny Woodson and associate Carolyn Cornell.
