(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Akin Supreme Court & appellate partner Aileen McGrath made her debut oral argument at the U.S. Supreme Court, advocating on behalf of El Dorado County, California, in a constitutional property-rights case with significant national implications for land-use planning.
In Sheetz v. County of El Dorado, Aileen argued that the Nollan/Dolan parcel-specific Takings Clause rule does not extend to legislatively mandated development impact fees applying to a broad class of permit applicants. Aileen’s argument builds on her experience representing local governments. Before joining Akin, she was co-chief of appellate litigation at the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office.
As Akin Supreme Court & appellate practice head Pratik Shah notes, “Aileen’s stellar Supreme Court debut reinforces what judges and clients on the West Coast have long recognized: Aileen is a superstar. She has not only strengthened our talented team but also joined the next generation of diverse advocates before the highest court in the land.”
This marks Akin’s third oral argument at the Supreme Court in nine months, including Shah’s arguments on behalf of the claimants in the bankruptcy case of opioid manufacturer Purdue Pharma (listen here) and for the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians in a closely watched tribal sovereign immunity case (listen here).
Akin’s renowned Supreme Court & appellate practice is also one of the nation’s most diverse, as 70% of its elite advocates are women or persons of color. They include veterans of the Solicitor General’s office and former Supreme Court clerks, who brief and argue dozens of cases every year in federal and state appellate courts across the country.
