Akin Representing Family of American Held by Taliban
Contact:
(Washington, D.C.) – An Akin team led by Washington, D.C.-based partner Ryan Fayhee and counsel Ryan Anderson in Dallas is working pro bono with the family of Ryan Corbett, an American who ran a consulting and microfinance company in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, to secure his release from Taliban custody.
Mr. Corbett, a German colleague and two local colleagues were detained in August 2022 by a Taliban security force in a city 300 miles northwest of Kabul. The State Department, in September 2023, designated Mr. Corbett as having been wrongfully detained.
Mr. Corbett and his family had first moved to Kabul in 2010 to work with nongovernmental organizations on humanitarian projects. His wife, Anna, appeared before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on November 14 and offered testimony as to Mr. Corbett’s business in Taliban, the conditions of his arrest, and the perilous physical and emotional state in which her husband finds himself after more than a year of detention, long stretches of which have found him in solitary confinement in Kabul prisons run by the Taliban’s General Directorate of Intelligence.
